“Have you had something for breakfast or lunch today, Kay?” my Boss asked, while I slipped friskily into a rumpled white t-shirt, that I had found amongst the unwashed pile of clothes in the wardrobe. “No Sir! Nothing yet!” I muttered through the t-shirt as it finally settled on me. “Well, since you haven’t, will you allow me to give you a special Saturday treat today, then we can talk while at it,” he asked. “Ermm… I’m sorry Boss, but I think we can talk about whatever you want us to talk about right here. I promise to keep it between us,” I answered as I went straight on and sat on my white plastic chair. He gazed at me, smiled and then shook his. “Why are you seated there Kay? Come over here and sit with me, please,” he said, as a light laughter escaped his mouth. “No Boss, I’m fine here. So, can we talk now?” I asked. He smiled, took his gaze off me and stared blankly at the window curtains. I narrowed down my head to my fingers and started cleaning off some invisible stains from them. I could feel my heartbeat gradually racing up in the sudden quietness that had crept up into my room and seemed to have built a wall between us.
“Kay,” his rich smooth silky voice said, calmly, finally breaking the long silence. “Yes Sir,” I answered. “Have you told anyone yet about what happened at the office yesterday,” he asked. No Sir! Had no intentions of doing such Sir,” I answered. “I am deeply sorry about what happened yesterday. I really am. I didn’t know what came over me. I just couldn’t hold back myself. Please forgive me Kay. Please forgive me. That’s all I came here to ask of you today. Please! I couldn’t sleep last night. I couldn’t forgive myself for what I did. I tried to pretend nothing ever happened but couldn’t get it out of my head. Several crazy thoughts had crept up my head for fear that you might go telling people about it. I’d thought of framing you up, which afterwards I’d fire you. But how could I do such to you. I’d never forgive myself if I did.so, I made up my mind to come see you face to face and ask your forgiveness… please,” he said.
“What manner of man is this? I can’t remember when last I saw or heard a man cry, but this one isn’t just a man. No! This is no man. This one is a demi-god. A crying demi-god. The sincerity in his voice was haunting. I could feel the very pains behind his words, piercing my skin. Not seen this kind of humility before, or is there something else attached to this?” I thought.
I reluctantly stuck to my chair, and listened quietly to his intermittent heavy sighs. “This isn’t happening. No! I must be dreaming,” I thought. I managed to raise my head slightly, and caught a quick glimpse of him. His head was bowed and fully buried in his palms. The sight sent chills through my spine. “How can a man be this broken? Not just any man. A man I’d seen as perfect. Cute, rich, perfect smile, good job, easy going, always smiling etc. a Demigod? How can? I murmured to myself. His mood made me speechless. I didn’t have an idea of the slightest thing to do to help. I felt as helpless as he was that moment. I didn’t even know to place him – As my boss, or a friend or just an offender who needed to be set free. To me seemed to be all three at once. I was confused.
There I was, still lost in thought thinking of what to do, when he stood up and walked towards me. My body cringed. My heart pounded. I felt a rush of feverish adrenaline flood through my veins. My eyes were affixed to his feet. He walked few to where I was seated and knelt down on one knee. I stood up and was about to briskly get behind him, when he held me. His touch set my whole body aflame. My feet gradually began to shiver. “Please forgive me Kay, I’m deeply sorry,” he said with his head still bowed. I forced myself of his grip and went behind him. I think he actually let me go, because I am very sure I was no match for his strength. “Boss please, pleeeaasseee... you’re making me uncomfortable. Please stand up. I’ve forgiven you. I have nothing against you. Everything that happened is now all in the past. Please, for goodness sake stand up. You’re making me feel very terrible at the moment,” I begged, feeling very embarrassed.
“Kay,” he called out. “Yes Boss,” I stuttered. “Please come and sit down,” he said with a certain childish sweetness in his voice. “Not until you stand up Boss,” I replied. “I won’t stand up until you agree your lunch for today is on me,” he said. “Okay! Okay!! I agree. Please stand up now,” I resounded. He stood, sat down and beckoned on me to come and sit down. I was walking to do so, when he grabbed me and pulled me to the bed.
“Kay, I have a problem I would love to share with you. Maybe, you’d be the one to proffer me with a tangible solution. Who knows? They say a problem shared is half solved,” he said as his smile, once again, crept up onto his lips. “Boss, I am nobody to share your problems with. I mean, what am I compared to you? I can’t possibly proffer any meaningful solutions whatsoever,” I said, trying to fight my hands off his grips. But he was just too strong for me. “Shhhhhhh… Hush Kay, you underrate yourself so much and that’s so, so bad of you,” he whispered. My whole body was hot. My stomach rumbled. I didn’t think I could get away this time. You don’t know how difficult a choice is, until you have to reject reluctantly what you so willingly desire. “Kay,” he called me again, softly. I couldn’t even summon the strength answer him. I was already hypnotized. How do I say no to what I secretly desired, that is being offered me here on a platter of gold? Just how?” I thought. He paused for few seconds after he called my name, still smiling, and the said, “Why do you think I hired you?” “I don’t know Sir. But it could be because you saw I needed the job badly back then,” I replied. “You’re wrong Kay. Very, very wrong. I didn’t hire you because you needed a job so badly. I hired you because I saw something in you. Something I’d rarely seen in many employees that have worked with me,” he said. “And what could that be Boss,” I inquired. “I’ll tell you but right after I’ve shared what is bothering me with you. Agreed?” he said. “Sure Boss,” I said forcing a faint smile on my face.
He pulled me closer to himself, my whole body melted. I was lost. Ready for whatever it was, with my eyes closed.
His lips were already on my neck, when suddenly we heard a banging on my door. “Who dey here?” a pitchy male voice yelled out first, forcing my boss to gently disengage me from his grips. “Who could that be,” I thought, as I made my way towards the door. “Are you expecting somebody,” my boss asked. ”Not expecting anyone boss,” I replied him. “Who lives here? Or nobody lives here,” a coarse cracked male voice continued to rant. Before I could open the door, Deola’s voice chimed from nowhere, “Broda! Broda!! Three policeman is looking for you ohhh!”
